Tobi (from The Book of Tobit) and three arcangels-presumably Raphael (center)Michael, and Gabriel. The painter, Giovanni Botticini(1446-1497), was evidently
unfamiliar with the details of the apocryphal tale, for nowhere in it is there mention
of any angel other than Raphael. Reproduced from Regamey, Anges.

Modern day references to angels and their effect and influence on our lives are ever-present.However,references to angels originated in the world's most widely read and most pervasive book of all time: The Bible. The Bible mentions three angels of name:

Michael

Chief among the angel-princes, Michael is sometimes a warrior-angel, appearing as such in the Old Testament book Daniel. In Revelation, it is Michael who leads an army of God's angels against Satan. He is an angel of repentence, mercy, righteousness, appearing in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian "angelology." He is often depicted with a sword.

Gabriel

A messenger angel who appeared to both the Virgin Mary and to Muhammad, Gabriel is the angel of annunciation, heavenly mercy, resurrection, and revelation. It is Gabriel who will blow the horn announcing the second coming of Christ. In Islamic tradition, Gabriel is the angel of humanity, the spirit of truth. His symbol is the lily.

Raphael

An archangel and chief among the guardian angels, Raphael has special charge of protecting the young, the innocent, and travelers. He is the angel of prayer, love, joy, light, providence and healing. He is often shown carrying a pilgrims staff.
